Hello, loves!
Today is a BIG day: it is the day that I begin my new position as an official nutritionist. I am so excited! I’ll be shadowing the head registered dietitian (RD) on staff today, so I won’t really be getting my hands dirty. Regardless, I am so excited to get started and help others recognize their true potential!
Workout
Today began like any other: with a solid workout, of course! I completed Zuzana’s ZWOW #14 in record time. For the past few weeks, I’ve been using this circuit as my “biceps” day and have been working on upping my weight and beating my time without sacrificing form. Today, I shaved FIVE minutes off my time!
After a good stretch, I put on my Reebok Sport Essential jacket and left with a goofy grin on my face. This is seriously my all-time favorite track jacket. It’s form fitting but still leaves plenty of room for movement – just my style!
Lunch
Today’s midday meal featured red bliss potatoes! Because of their white interior, potatoes get such a bad rep but they’re actually quite good for you! They’re loaded with vitamin C, potassium, and fiber and, despite what you hear, are low on the glycemic index, meaning they won’t give you a spike in blood sugar after consuming them. The reason people “fear” potatoes is because we can associate its white color with white bread. The difference here, however, lies in the fact that white bread is heavily processed and stripped of all the good stuff (bran and germ). Potatoes, however, are a whole food and, when prepared well (baked, steamed, and roasted), can be an ideal addition to your meal.
Okay, off my soapbox and onto lunch!
I made a quick-and-easy stir fry by sauteing frozen broccoli and peppers in some cooking spray before mixing it with 1 tsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. curry powder, 2 Tbsp. nutritional yeast, and a generous drizzle of Annie’s Organic Papaya Poppyseed Dressing. On the side, I had a small bowl of Wildlfour’s BBQ Red Bliss & Sweet Potato salad. This is so on my list to re-create! An amazing lunch indeed!
Color Me Rad 5K Giveaway!
Judging by yesterday’s Facebook post, you guys are going to LOVE today’s giveaway so much. Seriously – I have had butterflies for days just thinking about it!
Have you heard of Color Me Rad? Aside from their awesome name (“rad” is a frequently-used word in my vocabulary), the organization has an awesome philosophy on running: “Run For the Hell of It.” I have alluded to my off-and-on relationship with running in the past, and have settled on the same above philosophy. According to the Color Me Rad’s web site, here is how the race works: “Start out as clean as a newborn babe and, throughout the run, you’ll coat your chaffing thighs with blue, green, pink, purple, and yellow until your face, shirt, and body come out silkscreened like a tie-dyed hippy on the other side.”
Let’s be real. They had me at “tie-dyed hippy.”
Thanks to the kind folks at Color Me Rad and a recommendation from a killer team captain (Cait, I’m lookin’ at you!), I was given the above t-shirt and FOUR free passes to any Color Me Rad 5K across the country! I kept one for myself and gave another to Matty. The two of us will be running the Boston 5K as a part of Team FitFluential with Cait, Mattie, and Janine. Any other Boston residents who want to join our team, please email me (heather@fortheloveofkale.com) or Cait (caitplusate@gmail.com) for details!
So, what to do with the other two passes? Gift them to TWO of you, of course!
Here’s how you can enter:
- Leave a comment here telling me why you want to run the Color Me Rad 5K and where in the country you would like to run it!
- Tweet about this giveaway: “I want to win a RAD @colormerad5k giftcard from @theloveofkale!” and leave a comment telling me you did so.
The giveaway will close at midnight on Friday, June 8! Good luck, babes and dudes!
Stay lovely,
Heather

I want to run the Color Me Rad 5K in Boston because… simply, it just sounds like a LOT of fun!
My husband and I are already signed up – we’re running it on our 7th anniversary in Boston “) Quick question though, do you have a post or can you tell me what the benefits of nutritional yeast are? Thank you!
I want to run color me rad to see what all the excitement is about! I would run the race in Boston!
Hi Heather! As you know, I’m an avid follower of your blog and when I saw this, I FREAKED out from excitement! I have been wanting to do this run for a while now — I’ve had so many friends who have run it and had a blast. I recently got into running about a year ago (after I had an AWFUL case of mono) and running was how I was able to get back on my feet from being inactive for about 4 weeks. I started running 5ks and in April, I achieved my goal of running a half marathon! Anyway, I will stop blabbing. I would want to run the Color Me Rad 5K in Philly (I recently moved up to PA for a summer internship OR in Ft. Worth (I’ll be back in Texas at the end of summer!). Have a lovely day!
I’ve heard about the Color Me Rad races SO much recently and they sound like a blast! I’ve taken somewhat of a break from running (I was definitely overdoing it for a while) but am ready to ease myself back into it. This would be the perfect opportunity to get my feet wet again! (Plus, I’d be getting them wet with COLOR…it doesn’t get much better than that!)
Congrats on your new job, by the way! I can’t wait to hear about all of the exciting things you’ll be doing. (:
I would love to run this in Boston, MA!! It looks like such a fun carefree race!
I can’t wait to run this with you! I’m doing my giveaway soon but I’m glad you’re doing yours today, it’s nice and staggered that way
Thanks for giving my email so people can learn more, and I can’t wait to run this with you!
I would love to run this! I’ve heard of the color run, so I’m assuming this is pretty similar. It sounds so fun!
Oh when is this 5k?!? I have wanted to try one but I never know how to go about it! This one sounds great though and I love their t-shirt lol!
Id love to run the 5k in Boston and help represent the cruelty-free eaters of the East
I’ve never participated in any race and I’ve been dying to run a 5k! I think this race will be a great way to get introduced to 5k world
OMG! I was JUST talking about this race this past weekend. I’ve never done any kind of ‘fun run 5k’ (like the warrior dash, etc). This would be awesome to win!
Oh my GOSH, this looks like a blast!! Indy is the closest to me and I would totally drive there to participate because I LOVE a run that’s more than just a start and finish line.
hey girl hope your first day went good… i mean considering i found you the job and all
can’t wait to hear about it tomorrow!
The first thing that I posted on my #FitFluentail #FitnessBucketlist board on Pinterest was to do a Color Run! I want to run through a rainbow of paint in San Diego!
I would love to run Philadelphia or Boston! Sounds like such fun!
This looks amazing! I’ve heard so much about them but never really looked into it before. I’d LOVE to run the one in Tampa or heck maybe even make a weekend out if it and do the one in Miami…who knows. It’d be a great way for me to get back into training again as well!
I have already planned on running the Color Me Rad race in Oklahoma City in July! I haven’t registered yet, but will regardless of whether I win or not! So maybe i’ll be able to spread the love and give it to someone else if I was to win!
awesome giveaway! I would love to run it in Philly or Boston, sounds like a blast!
I want to run it because it sounds like a great time! I would run it in Boston.
I am so happy you touched on that white potato issue
Ahhhh I love you! We sure know our stuff girl! Can’t wait for you to recreate that recipe if you say it’s so good
can not wait to hear about your first day!!!!
I recently ran in the 2012 Boston Marathon in April (my first one… on the hottest day of the year!!! gah!) AND completed it! (thank goodness!) Since the marathon I guess you could say I haven’t been quite motivated to run. I feel like the COLOR RUN would a) get my butt out the door and b) also be FUN!!! I do have a bunch of friends doing it, and tried to make their team, but heard it was sold out?!
I’m from Massachusetts, so technically I would choose the Boston one, or somewhere close to that.
Thanks!
OMG this looks like the most fun, crazy awesome 5K ever!!!! Right up my ally! I also rediscovered my love of running for fun and want to try a new race every month. I would love to run the Color Me Rad in Boston! Be expecting an email from me too
Also, big congrats on landing the new position! You’re going to be amazing – I would totally want you as my nutritionist.
OMG, I would love to win these passes and participate in the Tampa, Florida Color Me Rad 5K. I am currently injured, but should be healed by then and it would be something rad to look forward to once I am recovered.
I keep reading blog posts with awesome pictures of these races and have been dying to join in the fun! I’d love to run in San Diego!
My sister works for Reebok at the headquarters in Canton and we love her 50% employee discount!
I have been dying to run in the Color Me Rad 5K since I saw another blogger post about it a few weeks back. I used to love running 5Ks but haven’t run one in almost 2 years! Time to get back in the game!

I would love to run another one after I crush Boston!! Can’t wait!
Oh my goodness this looks like so much fun! I also have a love/hate relationship with running- and running for the heck of it sounds perfect :] The closest race to me is probably the Jacksonville one.

Pittsburgh! I need something fun and carefree to get back into running.
I tweeted this too!! KatClark21
I want to run the Color Me Rad in Fort Worth on May 18 in honor of my mom, who died on that day 19 years ago. She dieted constantly and would be proud to know her daughter is getting in shape and having fun doing it. I’ve lost 40 lbs since last summer and only have about 20 to go!! I do realize the giveaway ends after the run :/
