Breakfast Date

July 20, 2012 by Heather

Good LORD I’m sore today! Yesterday’s chest workout definitely did a number on me (in a good way). I had intentions of completing a ZWOW this morning and was so excited to do my first-and-only HIIT workout of the week. I had a little debate in my head. My body was sore but my mind was so ready to tackle a workout. I was pumped and energized, so I decided to give it a go. Ha. About three minutes in, I knew my body needed a rest day so I stopped. While I was kind of bummed that my body couldn’t handle a workout, I had a date with my man to look forward to!

Breakfast Date

Around 9:00 a.m., Matty picked me up and, per his suggestion, the two of us went to Julian’s for breakfast. We hadn’t seen each other since Tuesday, so a date was much-needed. We hit the road and listened to NPR on the way up. Thanks to Cait and Matty, I’ve totally fallen in love with NPR. I love the wide array of subjects the station covers; I always learn something new!

Julian’s is such a great place. I’ve written about it a couple times and I am seeing a pattern, here. There always seems to be a picture of me drinking a beverage – once pinot grigo and twice coffee. Exhibit A (or, technically C and if you view the above posts first):

Hey there!

Ignore the woman behind me with a pained expression on her face. Maybe she has a caffeine-induced headache? Wimp. ;-) In all seriousness, the artwork, while a bit morbid, is amazing! Rebecca Adams is a Providence, RI native who specializes in black and white portraiture. Her art was all over the walls and I was really taken by it.

We sipped our coffee and perused Julian’s eclectic menu.

Before opening the above menu, I knew exactly what I wanted: a tofu scramble!

I ordered my scramble with mushrooms, broccoli, spinach, and red onion. It was amazing! My meal also came with a side of their incredible home fries, which are stir fried in olive oil and a bunch of spices. With a dollop of their homemade ketchup, this breakfast totally hit the spot.

Matty ordered some pancakes (and also helped me demolish my home fries).

Before taking some pictures of our food, I noticed my cell phone’s camera was acting funky. Everything was rainbow-style! It looked like we were in a club instead of a restaurant.

Real girls get down on the flo’.

Has this happened to anyone else’s cell phone cameras? So strange!

After breakfast, we went to Brown University’s bookstore to select a book for us to read together. Matty and I started reading Super Sad True Love Story together this year and I was not fan, so he ended up finishing the book on his own. At breakfast today, I declared it was time for us to embark on reading a new book.

I’ve been wanting to read Steve Martin’s An Object of Beauty for the past two years. I really admire Steve Martin – he’s sort of a Renaissance man with his talents as a comedian, songwriter, and author. Matty and I are excited to start reading it. Couples who read together stay together, right? Right. ;-)

Okay, I’m off to pack (ew) and then head to Connecticut (yay!) for the evening. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow!

Stay lovely,
Heather

Question of the Day: Have you read An Object of Beauty? If not, what are you reading right now?

I have read an Object of Beauty! I did end up really liking it, took a bit to get into. Couldn’t believe it was written by actor Steve Martin and I loved hearing all about the inside-workings of the art world!

Right now I am reading A Fraction of the Whole (Steven Toltz). Very good so far!

I’M OBSESSED WITH THAT BOOK. OMG. YOU WILL LOVE IT. All of his books are amazing. But this one is my very favorite. I’m so glad you two are gonna read it.
    SEE YOU SOON SQUEE.
I am so proud of your NPR listening this morning! I just tweeted a piece I listened to yesterday on Greek yogurt :) right up my alley.
Julian’s looks sooo yummy and that homemade ketchup reminds me of the fact that ION has some…must order a side of it with whatever I get tonight…
Is your cell phone still not functioning? You have the worst tech luck, BB! Also, it makes me LOL that it made Julian’s look like a club.

Oh! Object of Beauty is an absolutely lovely book! You will love it. Steve Martin is such a great writer. Have you read Shopgirl? I just love his stories. I think you will really enjoy this book!
I also really think Steve Martin is a genius. It baffles my mind how he can be so talented at so many different things.

  4. Right now I’m reading Daughter of Smoke and Bone. SO GOOD!!

  5. I want to read that book so bad I just haven’t had a chance yet. Right now I am reading 3 different books, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (I’m rereading the series), Clockwork Angel (the book my boyfriend and I are reading together) and the Catcher in the Rye.

  6. All I’m thinking is…did you not miss your protein oats! :)

I LOVED this book! It was especially fascinating for me because I am an art history minor but even if you are not already interested in the art world, you will be!

Enjoy the book and be sure to post what you think when you finish!

PS What did you think of Super SadTrue Love Story? I’ve been wanting to read it!
