  1. #RESTWEEK Tool Kit

    April 1, 2013 by Heather

Kasey and I are so excited to bring you #RESTWEEK. From April 8 – 14, we are going to guide you through 7 days of nourishing our bodies and strengthening our minds – no workout necessary.

While I’m so grateful for the gifts that the healthy living blog community has brought to me in the form of friendship and inspiration, I’m also seeing a lot of obsession around what we look like, how much muscle tone we have, and how many calories we burn during our workouts – especially on Instagram. Sure, it’s nice to challenge yourself physically. But your body is not an inanimate object. Your body is a vehicle through which you express love. And sometimes, we need to strip away anything that blocks us from really knowing that truth. And so, #RESTWEEK is born.

Make sure you sign up for the #RESTWEEK newsletter for extra doses of love to guide you through the week. We’ll be posting exclusive mantras and fun things in the newsletter that we won’t be posting on our blogs!

    Let’s Do This!

Kasey and I are doing this entire challenge right along with you, and so are a whole bunch of other incredible women! We’re going to be checking in with you on Twitter every day under the #RESTWEEK hash tag and we’ll even have a Facebook chat on my Facebook page next Wednesday, so keep an eye out for that too! Our goal for this challenge is to strengthen our minds and our bodies without feeling like we “have” to fit in a workout – because we don’t!

We take vacations from work every weekend and even two or three full weeks per year. We always come back to work feeling more refreshed and energized. Our brains are de-fried and ready to take in new information. Well, the same goes for our bodies. Sometimes, we need to nurture them with rest! Capeesh?

    Morning Me Time

We are going to start every morning with the best gift you can give yourself: love, baby! After waking up and peeling our beautiful bods out of bed, we will spend 5 – 10 minutes basking in “Morning Me Time.” These morning exercises are super special tools that Heather practices on a daily basis. Through a daily commitment of renewing our body vows, we can break free of any body-related hangups we have going on! This is stuff is transformative  Trust us – you’re not going to want to miss out! Here is what you’ll need:

    SoulFoodRecipes

Aside from our “Morning Me Time,” we have Kasey’s recipes to look forward to! She has some killer recipes on tap that are not only going to nourish our bodies but our souls. That’s why we call them SoulFood. It’s food for the soul! We included a grocery list of everything you’ll need so that, come day one, all you’ll have to do is check your inbox and you’ll be good to go!

    Honor Yourself

Take a moment to close your eyes and take a deep breath in and out. Honor yourself for making this week-long commitment to strengthening your mind and your body. We are so honored that you joined us and we are so excited to go on this journey with you!

    Stay lovely and #beTRUEtoYOU,
    Heather & Kasey

  2. Makeover your workout with one simple switch!

    March 25, 2013 by Heather

Some studies suggest that we have 60,000 thoughts per day.

Have you thought about the thoughts that you are thinking during your workout? Are you that person who compares yourself to others at the gym? Do you look at the person doing an advanced yoga pose and tell yourself you are less-than that person because you aren’t doing that pose?

Yoga means union – unification of your mind and your body. Answer this question (and get honest, yo): Are you truly united mind and body during your workout?

A couple of months ago, I started to notice that, when things got tough during my workout, I would go straight into Egoville. “You can’t do this” and “This move is too hard for you. Just give up” were the main ones that dominated my mind. Sound familiar?

If I’m not teaching at Mind Body Barre, I get my yoga on or complete a pilates workout at home. These are ways I move for my mind and my body, but it’s no good if I’m feeding myself and listening to doses of fear, right? For the past six months, I’ve made one simple switch to my workouts: I mantra while I move.

    Mantra

Snow White whistled while she worked to make work more fun! Why don’t we mantra while we move to make our workouts more fun and meaningful? Bring the passion to your workouts with mantras.

While I move, I pick one mantra and repeat it to myself throughout the workout when I feel that I need it (when a difficult move comes or when my mind goes into Egoville). Sometimes, it’s a simple mantra like “I am strong” or “I am balanced” or “I am powerful.” Other times, it’s lengthier. I might say to myself, “My body is a messenger of love” so I can focus on the true purpose of my body while I’m moving it.

This simple switch is so powerful because we’re re-training our minds while those feel-good endorphins hit. So, literally your mind and your body are flowing together. In union. Now, it will probably feel really silly at first and that’s normal. I felt like a tool doing it at first but I kept practicing it (isn’t everything in life a practice?) and soon, I started to really dig it. Now, it’s like second nature and, best of all, my ego thoughts are barely present now.

Do you mantra while you move?

    Stay lovely,
    Heather

P.S. – You know who is a big fan of mantra~ing while you move? My teacher and mentor Gabrielle Bernstein. Today, her FREE May Cause Miracles conference begins! It’s five days. 20 miracle workers. Endless inspiration. Are you ready for it?! Sign up with me here.

  3. Product I’m Loving: NRG Matrix & GIVEAWAY! [COMMENTS CLOSED]

    December 19, 2012 by Heather

I’m not an energy drink kind of girl – never was. I work out on an empty stomach first thing in the morning (working out with food in my belly makes me want to hurl) and always feel energized.  This is what works for me and it may very well work for you too – or maybe you need some breakfast before your workout. That’s fine! As my girl Kasey says, #beTRUEtoYOU!

Now, I’m going to totally contradict myself. And I’m totally okay with it. I blame the NRG Matrix team for making such a rockin’ product. ;-)

For those of you that are not familiar with NRG Matrix, it is actually a raw, organic energy drink made from mushrooms. Yep, mushrooms. Don’t be deceived by the modernized packaging. This stuff is the real deal, my friends. I will totally admit that I pre-judged this product. Kasey told me to check it out and, at first glance, I thought, “Ya, ya, ya, I have energy for dayyys. I don’t need this supplement stuff.” Forgive me, NRG Matrix. I was wrong and judgmental. Tisk tisk! And, for the record, this is not a supplement. It is a whole foods-derived energy drink!

What I love the most about NRG Matrix is the fact that it provides an affordable alternative to Red Bull, Monster, and all those other energy drinks that have been proven to have long-term negative effects on our bodies. NRG Matrix was created by a team of healthcare professionals and scientists seeking to create an honest, compassionate #plantPOWERed product that gives us long-lasting energy. Um, yes please.

The primary ingredient in NRG Matrix is medicinal mushrooms, which contain a key ingredient called cordyceps that has been scientifically proven to enhance exercise performance. Cordyceps does this by increasing the amount of oxygen delivered to our bodies and enhancing the production of ATP, a co-enzyme in our bodies that is responsible for energy transfer.

Here’s what the ingredient list looks like:

    • Organic Medicinal Mushrooms grown in San Marcos, California (for lasting energy)
    • Organic Extracts – Yerba Mate, Guarana, American Ginseng, Tumeric Root (for improved immune function)
    • Vitamin Blend – Vitamin C, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B12, Vitamin D (derived from the Medicinal mushrooms!)
    • Organic Stevia, Monkfruit

Impressive, huh? I love how every ingredient has a purpose. The monkfruit and stevia give NRG Matrix a delicious, mild citrus flavor.

I can really attest to the product. I’ve been using it every other day for the past two weeks and have been recording my energy levels. On the days that I drink NRG Matrix during my toning routines, I definitely notice a difference in my energy levels. I literally feel like I could go for hours! When I don’t drink NRG Matrix and just drink water, after about an hour, I’m ready to call it quits. Like I said, it’s the real deal and I would absolutely recommend it to everyone!

NRG Matrix is a powder that comes in a convenient pouch. I simply pour the packet into my Camelbak before filling it up with water. After a generous shake, you’re good to go!

So, what do you think? Would you like some NRG Matrix? Well, if you insist.. ;-)

Thanks to the kind team at NRG Matrix, they’ve agreed to gift TWO readers with a 10-pack of NRG Matrix! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me how you would incorporate NRG Matrix into your daily life. Entries will close on Saturday at 12:00 a.m. and the winners will be announced on Sunday. GOOD LUCK!

*Edited to add (thanks to reader, Kirsten!): You can purchase NRG Matrix online at their website here! Per packet (i.e. per serving), they’re almost $1.00 cheaper than the price of leading energy drinks in most stores.

    Stay lovely,
    Heather
