  1. 11 Random Facts About Me

    February 6, 2012 by Heather

Well, hello there!  It’s Monday, which is my super intense, long day of classes. Seven hours, baby! I have to tell you, after sitting in class for seven hours, I have zero desire to do homework. Alas, life is not always fair and we must prevail!

    Workout

Today started off on the best of notes – with a great workout! I began with 25 minutes on the arc trainer, alternating between two minutes at level one and two minutes at level five. WHEW! At 10 minutes, I was gasping for air. It was awesome. Afterwards, I completed this arm workout, which left my arms feeling like JELLY! Hence the name…

    Jelly Arms!

    Exercise

    Tricep Dips

    Tricep Push-Ups

    Chest Presses

    Chest Flyes

    Hammer Curls

    Concentrated Curls

Repeat  3x, doing 20 reps of each move (I used 8 lb. dumbbells). Get ready to feel the burn!

    Breakfast

After my workout, I came back to my dorm room to make breakfast, which I took with me to class. I made a single-sized batch of Vega Protein Pudding Oats! This is, hands down, my new favorite morning meal.

A few of you have asked about whether I eat the oats raw and, yes I do! After snapping a photo, I stir the oats into the Vega and almond milk mixture, let it sit for 5 minutes and then eat it. The oats become soft and that’s why I call it protein pudding oats! It also looks like vomit afterwards, which is why I snap a “before” photo. You’re welcome.  ;-)

    Lunch

For my second class of the day, we went to a local food pantry. As part of my Community Nutrition course, teams of classmates are designing a nutrition-related education program for the food pantry and writing a $3,000 grant for the program. We are presenting our grant to the senior vice president of the food pantry. The winning team’s project will actually be used at the food pantry. I’m really excited for this project! Nerd alert.

After visitng the pantry, my friend Kristin and I came back to my dorm room to enjoy some lunch.

Into the bowl went baby spinach, veggies, avocado and horseradish mustard. I also topped one slice of Ezekiel bread with greek olive hummus. This was heavenly. I’m really happy I purchased this hummus instead of my usual roasted garlic. Small switches make all the difference sometimes!

    11 Randoms Game

A little while back, both Amanda and Jenn tagged me in this fun little game and I thought it would be a fun way to start off the school week! I’m going to tell you right now that I’m breaking some rules in this game. Say whaaat?! Yes, I’m a rebel. But more on that later.

    11 Random Things About Me

1.) My most ticklish spot is my feet. I laugh like a total nut-job and literally freak out. Once, after warning Matty not to ever tickle my feet, he didn’t listen. Then, I kicked him in the head. Darn reflexes.

2.) I am deathly afraid of snakes. Wahhh. I shudder just typing that.

3.) Hanging in my room is a Michel Buble calendar. We’re currently on February, or shall we say the-month-of-a-stoic-pose-with-a-glass-of-wine? I’m okay with it.

4.) I am a self-taught piano player. I also sing and write my own music. Click here for a taste! (I posted this on my Facebook wall too)

5.) When I don’t eat a salad, the next day, I have withdrawals. Sad? YEP.

6.) My favorite snack is sea salt popcorn sprinkled with nutritional yeast. Can’t get enough!

7.) I was probably the only person that didn’t like the halftime show last night. Feel free to throw rotten tomatoes at me.

    8.) Read this.

9.) How much do you love me for making you read that?

10.) My favorite band as of late is The Civil Wars. Has been for the past six months, actually!

11.) Matty and I like to sing to The Civil Wars in the car. Maybe we’ll record a snippet for you sometime. Maybe not?

Now, I’m going to break the rules and stop here. Mostly because I am so hungry that my arm looks really tasty right now. Just kidding. Kind of. Instead, I want YOU to tell me something random about yourself! GO.

    Stay lovely,
    Heather

  2. Sexy Arms & New Playlist!

    February 2, 2012 by Heather

Hey there! Today has been insanely busy, but good! I’ve had a couple of articles on deadline that I need to wrap up for both school and freelance work. So far, so good!

    Workout

Before the hustle and bustle of the day began, I got my sweat on. Today’s workout started with 30 minutes of HIIT on the treadmill. I kind of went hog wild with speeds today. It was fun! Afterwards, I completed three circuits of this arm workout. It burns and, therefore, will make your arms sexy. ;-)

Note: All exercises were performed with 8-lb. dumbbells. The ABC move was performed using one 6-lb. dumbbell.

I was going to also complete the new Tone It Up workout but I ended up falling off the exercise ball and onto my tailbone. I’m so graceful, I know. Anyways, it kind of hurt so I nixed the lower body routine in favor of some stretching. Thankfully, I’m feeling a bit better and hope to complete it tomorrow!

    Breakfast

Breakfast was (mostly) mushy and delicious.

It’s Vega protein pudding oats! Into the bowl went 1 scoop of Vega Chocolate Performance Protein, 1 cup of almond milk, and about 1/3 cup organic oats. I also apparently ate a very pink looking orange? Still delicious! Whatever floats its boat, right?

I worked away in my dorm room before interviewing a professor on campus for another article that I’m working on. Then, it was lunch time!

    Lunch

My fridge is looking a little sad but I made do with what I had on hand to make a satsifying meal!

That salad looks rather dreamy, doesn’t it? Well, it was! I combined the usual veggie suspects and topped them with Whole Foods sesame dressing, a sprinkle of nutritional yeast, and a dash of cumin. I wanted a hummus sandwich too but I have no self control and ate the entire container in the past four days (whoops?), so plain Ezekiel bread it was!

    New Workout Playlist

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted a workout playlist so I thought I’d give it a go today. Music is really the driving force behind my motivation to work out. If I didn’t have music to listen to, I’m not sure that I would push myself as hard as I do during my workouts. The beat of the bass drum and “You can do it!” lyrics play a huge role in making my workout all it can be!

Here’s what I’ve been listening to this week:

What’s on your playlist lately? Let’s share our musical inspirations!

I’m off to finish up my article, pack, head to class, and then drive home! Tomorrow is my Auntie Claire’s funeral and, by the grace of God, my one and only class is cancelled! Have a beautiful night.

    Stay lovely,
    Heather

  3. Getting Uncomfortable

    January 4, 2012 by Heather

Happy Wednesday, loves! Hope your day is off to a fantastic start. Before we get to today, let’s backtrack a bit.

Last night after work, my dear friend Ashlee and I made a trip to Whole Foods. The Vega Protein Performance was on sale and I was itching to use one of my gift cards to purchase the powder. I’ve been wanting this baby for awhile now and it feels so great to be able to actually afford to purchase it! One scoop has 26 grams of protein and all of your essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. HOLLA! ;-)

    Beautiful and deeeelicious

In addition to the protein powder, we decided to get some dinner because…well…it’s Whole Foods. I enjoyed a dinner of circles. Circular falafel, circular roasted Brussels sprouts, and a circular soup container filled with curried apple pumpkin soup. Swoon city.

We chatted, laughed, and munched before hitting up Gap and Old Navy to browse around for a bit. We applauded ourselves for restraining from purchasing anything.

    Workout

This morning made for another great total body workout! I began with a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout on the stationary bike that I created last night. I warmed up for 5 minutes before alternating between 2 minutes “off” (at a steady speed) and 1 minute “on” (sprinting all out) for a total of 30 minutes. It looked like this:

    HIIT Workout

Alternating the resistance really challenged me. Speed work at any resistance higher than one is tough stuff. It was awesome! For any exercise newbies, HIIT is a great way to get your heart rate up, increase your metabolism, and really challenge your muscles. K&K have a great explanation as to how and why HIIT workouts do this. After my HIIT workout, I moved on to complete two circuits of the TIU Bootycamp workout. Done and done! I made sure to make a quick BOOTYCALL video too. Check it out on the Tone it Up Nutrition Plan Facebook page or on YouTube!

    Breakfast

Post-workout, I was really excited to start my day off with some Vega! I took a scoop and mixed it with 10 ounces of water to drink with my breakfast. I ate while watching Live! with Kelly with my Mama.

I kept it simple this morning with a bowl of Nature’s Path Flax PLUS flakes in almond milk, served with a darling little clementine. I love these babies!  We have about a billion of them sitting in our fruit basket at home.

For the remainder of the morning, I moved onto day seven of blog homework. Before I knew it, my tummy was beckoning me for some lunch!

    Lunch

My mom and I had lunch together today while watching Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Would you believe I’ve never seen it before?! It’s such a classic. Well, don’t hate me but…we ended up turning it off after about 45 minutes. It just wasn’t our cup of tea. I love Audrey Hepburn, though. Roman Holiday is my favorite of hers.

Anyways, back to lunch. Today’s salad was topped with nutritional yeast and a dressing made from 1 Tbsp. Soyaki Sauce and 1 tsp. sesame oil. I also enjoyed an open-faced sandwich of hummus, avocado, and tomato.

The rest of the day was spent cleaning (ew) and now I’m about to head off to work until ten. Hope you all have beautiful evenings! Drink some hot tea for me!

    Getting Uncomfortable

In the past year, I’ve incorporated more strength training into my daily workouts. More than ever, I’ve come to the realization that if you want to see changes in your body, you have to be willing to get uncomfortable. If we aren’t feeling it, changes simply aren’t going to happen.

When I’m strength training, I make sure the following are happening:

    • I’m sweating.
    • I’m feeling a burn – not pain!
    • I’m feeling challenged.
    • My heart is pumping.

If any of the following are not happening, I know that it’s time to re-evaluate things. For example, I might need to decrease my rest time between sets, up my weights, or add more repetitions of each exercise. Our bodies are pretty darn amazing and they adjust to what we need.

Getting uncomfortable during strength workouts really requires you to be aware of your body. It has been a blessing in disguise for me because I’ve started to appreciate my body for what it is capable of instead of focusing on what it looks like. Because I’m working so hard and listening to my body’s needs, I accept it so much more. Have you experienced this? Ooookay, ramble session over. ;-)

Well, I’m off to work until ten!

    Stay lovely,
    Heather
